London, 5th December, 2006: According to FootFall, an analyst that measures retail traffic, the number of visitor’s to the high-street market zones fell by 7.3% in comparison to November 2005.
Stating this year to be the worst build-up to the festive season, FootFall said that it was a “real concern” that retailers had failed to build the interest of customers despite launching early price cut. Natasha Burton, a spokes-woman, said: "We are already hearing reports that this will be the worst Christmas for over 25 years and on the evidence of this index, it could be a bad end of year for retailers who have normally relied on buoyant trading in the festive period."
The British Retail Consortium (BRC) said that sales growth was driven by food rather than general goods. With high level promotional activity failing to whet the customer’s appetite, it is anybody’s guess how the season will turn out for the retailers.
