Gehry developed Cloud as a homage to the sculptural work of Isamu Noguchi and was initially constructed out of deformed paper cups stapled together, another factor that made the judges smile. Due to safety reasons a more practical alternative was selected: a multiply refined polyester. With its fibrous appearance it looks just like paper, giving the lamp an appealing, ephemeral quality.
