On Sunday, June 4th from 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM, at Hofstra University the Lupus Alliance will host an educational symposium entitled, “Growing up with Lupus.”
The event will be sponsored by the American AutoImmune Related Diseases Association. Pre-registration is requested through the Lupus Alliance and includes a light breakfast, workshop materials and all sessions and addresses.
Topics will include how lupus affects children, children’s disability issues, school 504 plans, alternative therapies, the psychological effects of lupus and other autoimmune diseases on the whole family and using humor to cope. Speakers include Dr. Beth Gottlieb, MD a Pediatric Rheumatologist from Schneider Children’s Hospital, Dr. Robert Phillips, PhD renowned author and director of the Center for Coping in Hicksville, John Antonowicz, ESQ from the law firm Fusco, Brandenstein and Rada and Jillian Rose, MSW Supervisor, LupusLine and Charla de Lupus Programs/Lupus Chat Programs Hospital for Special Surgery.
Christine Miserandino and Carole-Anne Bonner, two young women who were diagnosed with lupus in their teens, along with Paula Goldstein, CSW will hold an open discussion group with the children and teens only on what it is like to grow up with lupus. Throughout the day tables will be available with information on clinical trails and research, advocacy both at home and in Washington and information and brochures in Spanish.
The symposium promises to be informative and helpful to anyone who has a child living with Lupus or any autoimmune illness or pain disorder. Registration is $5.00 per adult for members of the Alliance and $10.00 per adult for non-members. Children of members are free and children of non-members are $3.00 each.
