As the scheduled date to file income tax returns draws nearer, many are reminded of the stress they have to go through to complete the tedious process. For some, it is even harder than the effort they have to put in to earn their bread throughout the year. Many would prefer to skip out on the entire process than go through all of it, even if it is just once a year, thanks to the lengthy procedures, never-ending queues, and irate government officials. Thanks to the internet, one does not need to stand in long queues anymore for the same. E-filing, introduced by the Government of India two years back, has found its roots quite well among the Indian masses and is slowly being accepted as the preferred method of filing income tax returns.

While many might perceive this new method of filing taxes online to be too technical for them to understand, there are many websites providing the same facility with detailed step by step procedures. Mahesh Bathla, Co-founder, PaisaWaisa.com, states that filing tax returns online is not a new phenomenon globally, and the Indian masses have to realise the potential of the internet for accomplishing their daily activities. “Everything, from shopping to paying bills to communicating among one's peers is done through the internet today. Then why not paying taxes? It is an equally essential procedure, and perfectly safe.” According to statistics, 21.93 lakh taxpayers filed their returns online in 2006-07, as against the relatively smaller figure of 3.7 lakh in 2005-06. The major advantages of filing tax returns online comprise of the ease and convenience associated with filing returns online, the assurance of proper handling of documents, facility of filing tax returns from anywhere and at any given time (27% of the e-returns filed were done beyond office hours, i.e., before 9 AM and after 6 PM), hassle free procedures, and a step by step guidance provided by portals to the consumer for him to fill in the details, something which often takes a lot of effort and expert advice in many cases, thanks to the abstruse terminology used in the generic tax return form issued by the Government of India. Currently, this service is nominally charged by portals offering the same, and the Central Board of Direct Taxes is expecting approximately 50 lakh returns via e-filing this year.
