The number of the beast, 'Six hundred threescore and six', is found to be an astronomical calculation predicting the resurrection of an ancient enemy that will unleash the greatest battle Earth has ever known... Armageddon.
"Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast..." says the Book of Revelation. In Chapter 13, the prophet John sees a great beast rise up from the earth with horns like a lamb and the voice of a dragon. In the sight of men he makes fire come down from heaven as he prepares for battle. This beast is a celestial enemy. The first time he waged war in heaven he arose out of the 'sea'; an ancient name for the vastness of outer space. The beast lost his first conflict with Earth. It appeared as if he "... were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed." His carcass remained in heaven for all to see along with the threat of future devastation to Earth. The possibility of another celestial war caused men to worship the wounded image from awe and fear.
"...and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations." From the time the beast claimed his throne in heaven and to this day, all who dwell on Earth share the number of the beast and bear his mark in their right hand or in their foreheads. These two images of the mark represent the ruling class (in their foreheads) and the laborer (in their right hand)... the small and the great... the rich and the poor.
