On Saturday 10th June, Javea Ayuntamiento presented 51 junior Club Deportivo Washinkai karate students with a medal to recognise their dedication to karate.

The students were also asked to perform an impromptu demonstration which began with all 51 carrying out Kihon simultaneously.

Pablo Gonzalez performed his silver medal winning Rohai kata, Ben Silberberg performed Chinto, Daniella Waterland showed her trophy winning Saifa, Jose Rangel demonstrated Naihanchi and Felix Mason performed the Jion kata which won him Gold Medal in the British Traditional Karate National Championships.

Several advanced defences were shown against a baseball bat,
whilst knife and sword attacks were finished with spectacular flying throws.

The demonstration was rounded off with the simultaneous breaking of 25 wooden boards, whilst Instructor Ray Sweeney punched his way through 10cm (4”) of solid pine.

The demonstration, in front of Javea Sports Councillor Jose Erades, Sports Coordinator Paco and many Javea residents, was finished to resounding applause.

Club Deportivo Washinkai Karate has over 80 students, ranging from 5 to 68 years of age, training in several clubs around Javea, including Colegio el Arenal, Javea Sports Centre and Xabia International College. Washinkai Karate is the Municipal School of Karate, its members form the Official Karate Team of Javea and is supported and sponsored by Javea Ayuntamiento.
