Internet based gourmet coffee cake company combines efforts with X-files star Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully) to support health research.
Both Anderson and coffee cake bakery are donating proceeds from sales of goods during holidays and into 2006. It all started with a shocking medical diagnosis but has turned into a company’s mission. Sherry Comes, President and Founder of CoffeeCakes.com, an online-only specialty food and gift retailer, received her son’s medical news earlier this year and immediately sprang into action forming a charitable program to help find a cure.
The diagnosis: Neurofibromatosis (NF), a rare genetic disorder of the nervous system which causes tumors to form on nerves, resulting in disfigurement, deformity, deafness, blindness, brain tumors, cancer and death.
According to Comes, a portion of all proceeds from her gourmet online bakery will go to Neurofibromatosis (NF), Inc., a nonprofit organization which not only provides support and services to stricken families, but works closely with clinical and research professionals who specialize in the treatment of this disease.
Coffeecakes.com has already begun to collaborate with some heavy hitters striving to find a cure for this disease. Among them is actress Gillian Anderson, best known for her role of Dana Scully on the “X-Files,” who began her NF Inc. work with her brother's diagnosis in 1984.
"I am proud to be a part of this wonderful charitable partnership to raise both money and awareness to help find a cure,” Comes says. “We are excited about our alliance with Gillian Anderson, who has already done so much to help those affected by NF."
According to NF, Inc.'s President, Miguel Lessing, NF is classified as a rare disorder; therefore government funding is limited.
CoffeeCakes.com was founded in 1995 and has been recognized by the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and the Food Network. They currently sell over 80 gourmet cakes including Traditional Cinnamon Walnut Coffee Cake, gourmet cheesecake samplers, and Downey's Irish Whiskey cakes, in addition to coffee presses, teapots, travel mugs and other unique gourmet gift items.
