This year Wicklow recording artist John Breen (whose debut CD "John Breen" was released internationally Dec. 2004 by American label Alternative-Urban records) kicks off his summer gig season at home in his own Wicklow Town at the stage seven finish of this years FBD Insurance RÁS.
The 'FBD Insurance RÁS' is an eight day cycle race organized in Ireland since 1953. The 2005 bike race is the biggest ever in the race's history, 200 contenders with international squads from the USA Canada, France, Netherlands, Norway, Britain, Wales, Scotland, Germany, Estonia and the Czech Republic in attendance giving the Irish squad a ride for their money. Stage seven will be the toughest stage of the race with the racers facing a total of seven climbs (three premiers) through the Wicklow mountains before speeding their way through the final 22 kilometres to the finish in Wicklow Town.
To quote FBD marketing director Adrian Taheny, ‘We disrupt the whole country with the FBD Insurance Rás moving around and then, whatever town it is going into, we always have our local people there at the finish." With a huge crowd expected in Wicklow Town to cheer on the racers, and a great post race entertainment planned featuring John Breen and his band Finan, (anyone who's been at John Breen's previous Wicklow Regatta performances will attest he is the penultimate performer), it should be a great end to a great day's racing.
