Is a demo CD and a band photo enought to get an indy musician noticed by a record label anymore? A new company offers low cost promotional video packages to do just that.video Vancouver BC March 2nd 2006-- For most musicians fame and success is not guaranteed despite what the music school brochures have told them. Even after graduation most still find them selves working their McJob by day and pulling all-nighters on their music, trying to save money by eating KD and Ramen Noodles while all their finances go into their music. In the end they find these sacrifices they make bear little Fruit. The problem: most have a hard time promoting themselves and the work they do in a growing industry competing for attention.
“We get sixty to eighty press kits a week and we don’t have enough time to go through them all” Dana Kirby, a booking agent with “Live Tour Artists”, told many young hopefuls during a panel discussion at the recent Western Canadian Music Awards Conference in Vancouver. Another panelist - Omar Al-Joulani of “The Agency Group” added, “If I see another photograph of an artist standing against a brick wall or on railroad tracks trying to look cool…I am going to scream. Don’t tell me you’re good, I believe I am good too but that’s not proof – show me you’re good, send me something quick I can click on and see for myself. If I don’t see an artist using modern promotional methods and working technology – red flags go up”
Enter Ryan McCann an artist, film school graduate, and sales and marketing professional that has worked in the BC Music Industry for years and has recently launched McCann Video Productions (MVP) a video production. Company focused on providing promotional video services to independent musicians who don’t have a record label or marketing studio to do their promotions for them. He does the full range of video services for musicians including web and video-podcasts, EPK (electronic Press Kit)videos, music videos and performance videos on DVD - released for merch’ tables or promotion. Videos designed to promote the musicians
“Record labels, and booking agents get thousands of submissions each year so
an artists success in getting noticed is not usually a reflection of the talent of the artist in
question – rather it is the ever shrinking window in which they need to make the largest
impact” said Ryan “The traditional onepage and demo CD may not work anymore. Modern methods of promotion now requires the delivery of a more powerful message in a shorter period of time and since 80% of communication is non-verbal the most effective way to communicate your talent would need to be both audio and visual This way the music industry out east will take notice of the too often ignored west coast artist - A venue manager in Toronto can see the stage presence and professionalism of a Vancouver band, while a booking agent out of Winnipeg can see how the audience goes wild for a singer from Burnaby.“
